A chemical peel is only as effective as the aftercare that follows it. In our clinic, we see a consistent pattern: patients who follow the post-peel protocol achieve excellent outcomes; those who don’t — whether through impatience, product experimentation, or sun exposure — either see reduced results or develop PIH that requires additional treatment. This is the protocol we give every patient.

The First 24-48 Hours

Immediately after a peel, the skin is sensitised and the barrier is temporarily compromised. Use only water and a very gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Apply only the barrier repair products provided or recommended by your dermatologist — typically a simple ceramide moisturiser or healing balm. No actives, no makeup, no fragranced products. Avoid touching or rubbing the skin. If the peel was deeper (medium-depth), expect redness, mild swelling, and a tight, warm sensation — this is normal. Keep the skin consistently moisturised to support healing.

Days 3-7 — The Peeling Phase

Most chemical peels produce visible flaking and peeling from day 3 onwards. The critical rule: do not pick, peel, or pull at the skin. Premature removal of peeling skin disrupts the healing process, increases the risk of scarring, and is the most common cause of PIH after a peel. Let the skin shed on its own timeline. Continue gentle cleansing, consistent moisturisation, and nothing else.

Sun Protection — Non-Negotiable

Post-peel skin is significantly more photosensitive than normal. UV exposure in the days and weeks following a peel on Indian skin is one of the most reliable ways to trigger PIH. Mineral sunscreen SPF 50 PA++++ must be applied every morning from the first day after treatment and consistently for at least 4 weeks post-peel. Avoid direct sun exposure where possible. Wear a hat outdoors. This is not optional advice — it is part of the treatment.

When to Resume Actives

Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, and other actives should not be resumed until the skin is fully healed and the peeling phase is complete — typically at least 1-2 weeks post-peel for superficial peels, longer for medium-depth. Resuming too early re-sensitises recently healed skin and disrupts the barrier. At your post-peel review, we assess healing and advise on when it is safe to reintroduce your regular routine.
