Growth Factor Concentrate — GFC — has become one of the most discussed hair loss treatments in dermatology over the past few years, and increasingly one of the most requested at our clinic. It sits alongside PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) in the category of autologous biological therapies — treatments derived from the patient’s own blood — but with a meaningfully different mechanism and, in our clinical experience, a more consistent and concentrated therapeutic effect.

What GFC Is and How It Differs from PRP

Both GFC and PRP are derived from the patient’s own blood. In PRP, blood is drawn, centrifuged to concentrate the platelets, and the resulting plasma is injected into the scalp. Platelets release growth factors when activated, which stimulate hair follicle activity and increase blood supply to the scalp.

GFC takes this further. A specialised preparation kit is used to extract and concentrate only the growth factors themselves — PDGF, VEGF, EGF, TGF-beta and others — from the platelets, without the surrounding plasma, red blood cells, or inflammatory mediators. The result is a higher concentration of active growth factors with lower inflammatory potential. In practice, this means better tolerability during the procedure and, in clinical studies, superior hair density outcomes compared to standard PRP.

Who It Is For

GFC is most effective for androgenetic alopecia — pattern hair loss, which is the most common cause of hair thinning in both men and women. It is particularly well-suited to patients in the early to mid stages of pattern loss where follicles are still active but miniaturising. It can also be used for diffuse hair thinning from non-scarring causes, and as a complementary treatment alongside oral medications like minoxidil or finasteride.

It is not appropriate for scarring alopecias, where the follicle has been permanently destroyed — in those cases, there is no follicle left to stimulate. A proper diagnosis before starting any hair loss treatment is therefore essential.

What the Treatment Involves

GFC treatment begins with a blood draw — typically 16-32ml depending on the protocol. The blood is processed using the GFC kit, which takes approximately 30-40 minutes. The concentrate is then injected into the scalp at the areas of concern using a fine needle. The procedure takes approximately 45-60 minutes in total and is performed with topical anaesthesia or local nerve blocks to minimise discomfort.

Post-treatment, mild scalp tenderness and occasional swelling for 24-48 hours is normal. Patients can wash their hair and return to normal activity the following day.

Protocol and Results

The standard initial GFC protocol at our clinic is three sessions, each spaced four weeks apart. Results are not immediate — hair growth has a natural cycle, and the stimulation provided by GFC takes time to translate into visible density improvement. Most patients begin to notice reduced shedding within 4-6 weeks and measurable improvement in hair thickness and density at 3-6 months after completing the initial course.

Maintenance sessions every 6-12 months are recommended after the initial course to sustain the results. GFC does not cure the underlying cause of hair loss — it manages it. Androgenetic alopecia is a genetic and hormonal condition that continues to progress without ongoing management.

Combining GFC with Other Treatments

At our clinic, we rarely use GFC in isolation for significant hair loss. For androgenetic alopecia, the most effective approach combines GFC with appropriate medical therapy — minoxidil (topical or oral) for both men and women, and finasteride or dutasteride for suitable male patients. This multi-modal approach addresses the condition from different angles simultaneously and produces better long-term outcomes than any single treatment alone.

If you are experiencing hair thinning or loss and want to understand what is causing it and what the most appropriate treatment approach is for your specific pattern, that is the conversation our hair consultations are designed for.
