Thread lift content on social media almost universally shows dramatic before-and-after results — significantly lifted cheeks, sharply defined jawlines, visibly rejuvenated lower faces. Some of these results are genuine. Many are a combination of favourable lighting, swelling (which temporarily creates a tighter appearance), and selective case presentation. Patients arrive at our clinic with these images, and one of the most important conversations we have is calibrating expectations against clinical reality.

What Thread Lifts Genuinely Do Well

Thread lifts using barbed or coned PDO, PLLA, or PCL sutures do produce real, visible lifting — particularly in the midface, jowls, and along the jawline. For patients with moderate tissue descent who are not candidates for or interested in surgical correction, well-placed threads can meaningfully improve facial contour and restore some of the definition lost to gravitational descent. The collagen stimulation around the threads also provides a skin quality improvement that persists after the threads themselves have dissolved. These are real benefits.

What They Cannot Do

Thread lifts cannot replicate surgical results. They cannot address significant excess skin, very advanced jowling, or the kind of ptosis that requires SMAS manipulation. They are not permanent — the mechanical lifting effect lasts 12-18 months. And in patients with poor skin quality or very thin skin, thread visibility and surface irregularity are risks that must be discussed honestly before treatment.

Why Result Quality Varies So Much

Thread lift results vary more widely than almost any other aesthetic procedure — primarily because technique, thread selection, and anatomical assessment are highly skill-dependent. The same threads in the hands of an experienced dermatologist who has performed hundreds of procedures and an inexperienced practitioner who has completed a weekend course will produce completely different outcomes. Patient selection is equally critical — a thread lift on the wrong candidate produces a disappointing result regardless of technique.

If you are considering a thread lift, the most important question to ask is not about the brand of thread or the price of the procedure — it is about the clinical experience of the person performing it and the honesty of their assessment about what is achievable for your specific face.
