Collagen supplements — powders, capsules, drinks — have become a significant category in the Indian wellness and beauty market. The claims are broad: better skin, stronger hair, healthier joints, reduced wrinkles. The science is more nuanced. This is an honest assessment of what the evidence actually says.

What Collagen Supplements Are

Most collagen supplements contain hydrolysed collagen — collagen protein that has been broken down into smaller peptides (collagen peptides or hydrolysates) that are more easily absorbed in the gut. The source is typically bovine (cow), marine (fish), or porcine (pig). When ingested, these peptides are absorbed into the bloodstream and distributed to tissues throughout the body.

What the Evidence Shows

The evidence for oral collagen supplementation has strengthened meaningfully over the past decade. Multiple randomised controlled trials have shown that hydrolysed collagen peptides — particularly marine collagen at doses of 2.5-10g daily — improve skin hydration, elasticity, and the appearance of fine lines compared to placebo over 8-12 weeks of regular use. The proposed mechanism: absorbed collagen peptides stimulate fibroblasts in the dermis to produce more collagen and hyaluronic acid. There is also reasonable evidence for joint health benefits at higher doses (10-15g daily).

The Important Caveats

Collagen supplementation is not a replacement for clinical skincare or in-clinic treatments. The skin improvements documented in studies are real but modest — meaningful as part of a comprehensive approach, not transformative as a standalone intervention. The quality of the supplement matters significantly: not all collagen products are equal in terms of peptide size, bioavailability, and source. And collagen synthesis in the body requires cofactors — particularly vitamin C — so a collagen supplement taken without adequate vitamin C has reduced efficacy.

If you are considering collagen supplementation and want guidance on what to take, at what dose, and how it fits into your overall skin health strategy, this is something we discuss as part of our skin longevity consultations.
