Squalane is one of the few facial oils that we regularly recommend across all skin types — including oily, acne-prone, and sensitive Indian skin. This might seem counterintuitive for patients who have been told to avoid oils, but the biochemistry of squalane explains why it is different from most other oils and why its compatibility profile is exceptional.

What Squalane Is

Squalane is the hydrogenated (stabilised) form of squalene — a lipid naturally produced by the sebaceous glands that is a major component of skin surface lipids. Because squalane is structurally similar to the skin’s own sebum, it is non-comedogenic, integrates seamlessly into the skin’s existing lipid matrix, and does not disrupt the sebum balance the way many plant oils can. It is derived commercially from plant sources — primarily sugarcane or olive — and has an excellent stability profile (unlike many plant oils that oxidise and can become irritating).

What It Does for the Skin

Squalane is primarily an emollient — it softens the skin surface and reduces transepidermal water loss by forming a lightweight occlusive film. It does not provide active hydration (it does not draw water to the skin like a humectant), but it seals in the moisture that humectants like hyaluronic acid attract. It also has mild antioxidant properties and is exceptionally well-tolerated even by sensitised, post-procedure skin.

How to Use It in an Indian Skincare Context

For oily or combination Indian skin: 2-3 drops of squalane applied as the final step in the evening routine, after serums and before SPF the next morning. It provides barrier support without the greasiness of heavier plant oils. For dry skin: layer it over a hyaluronic acid serum and under a richer moisturiser for enhanced occlusion. For post-procedure skin (after peels or laser): squalane is one of the most tolerated emollient options during healing, when even standard moisturisers can cause irritation. It is also appropriate during pregnancy, when many other skincare actives are restricted.
