The rise of SPF-containing foundations, cushion compacts, primers, and setting powders has created a widespread belief that a full makeup routine with built-in SPF provides adequate sun protection. It does not — and the reasons are worth understanding clearly, because this misconception leads to significant cumulative UV exposure in patients who believe they are protected.
Why Makeup SPF Is Insufficient
SPF ratings are determined by applying 2mg of product per cm² of skin — a standardised quantity that creates a uniform, adequately thick film of protection. For foundation, this would mean applying approximately a full teaspoon to the face alone. Nobody applies foundation at this quantity. Studies measuring actual foundation usage consistently show application at 20-50% of the amount required to achieve the stated SPF. A foundation labelled SPF 30, applied the way people actually apply foundation, provides protection equivalent to approximately SPF 6-10 in real-world conditions.
The UVA Problem
Most makeup products with SPF are formulated primarily for UVB protection — the SPF number measures UVB. UVA protection (PA rating) in makeup is generally inadequate or unstated. For Indian skin, where UVA is the primary driver of melasma, PIH, and photoageing, a product with good UVB but poor UVA protection provides an incomplete shield against the most damaging UV wavelengths for skin of colour.
The Correct Approach
A dedicated sunscreen — applied in adequate quantity (1/4 teaspoon for face and neck) before any makeup — is non-negotiable as the primary UV protection step. Makeup with SPF provides a useful additional layer of protection on top of a proper sunscreen, but it cannot substitute for it. Setting powders with SPF are genuinely useful for reapplication over makeup during the day — a small amount dusted over the face every 2-3 hours of sun exposure is a practical way to maintain protection without disturbing a full face of makeup. But they supplement a sunscreen; they do not replace it.
