CO2 laser resurfacing is one of the most powerful skin treatments available in a dermatology clinic. It is also one of the most significant in terms of downtime, recovery, and the level of clinical skill required to use it safely on Indian skin.
What CO2 Laser Does
CO2 laser delivers precise energy at a wavelength selectively absorbed by water in skin cells, vaporising the superficial layers in a controlled pattern while triggering profound collagen remodelling in the deeper dermis. Fractional CO2 — which delivers energy in microscopic columns rather than ablating the entire surface — has largely replaced fully ablative CO2 for most indications, providing meaningful results with significantly reduced downtime.
Why Indian Skin Requires Extra Caution
CO2 laser carries a meaningful risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in Indian skin (Fitzpatrick types III–V). Any significant epidermal disruption triggers a melanocytic response, and in pigmentation-prone skin, this can result in darkening that takes months to resolve. This does not mean CO2 is contraindicated — it means it must be used with appropriate settings and meticulous pre- and post-treatment care. At our clinic, we prepare patients with a 4-6 week pre-laser protocol of topical retinoids, azelaic acid, and sunscreen before any ablative procedure.
What to Expect from Recovery
Immediately post-treatment, the skin is raw, red, and swollen for 48-72 hours. Crusting and peeling occur over the following week. By day 7-10, most patients are socially presentable. Redness can persist for 2-4 weeks. The final collagen remodelling result is assessed at 3-6 months. Post-treatment care is intensive: strict sun avoidance, barrier-repair moisturisers, and careful wound care.
