Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation technique that uses a sterile surgical scalpel blade held at a 45-degree angle to the skin surface to remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells and vellus (fine, soft) facial hair simultaneously. It has become popular in aesthetic clinics and as a DIY treatment — and it generates a significant amount of patient questions and misconceptions that are worth addressing clearly.
What Dermaplaning Actually Does
When performed correctly, dermaplaning removes the superficial dead cell layer that contributes to dullness and uneven texture, leaving the skin immediately smoother, brighter, and more reflective. It also removes the fine vellus hair that can make makeup appear cakey. This dual effect produces an immediate cosmetic improvement that most patients find gratifying. It does not stimulate collagen, treat pigmentation, or address concerns at a dermal level — it is a superficial treatment with superficial benefits.
The Vellus Hair Myth
The most persistent concern about dermaplaning: will the vellus hair grow back thicker and darker? The answer, definitively, is no. Vellus hair is not terminal hair — it does not have the follicular structure or hormonal sensitivity that would cause it to become darker or coarser. Hair diameter and colour are determined at the follicle, not at the point of cutting. Shaving the face does not alter hair type; neither does dermaplaning. The regrowth may feel stubbly initially as the tapered tip of the removed hair grows back, but the hair itself is unchanged.
Who Should Avoid It
Dermaplaning is not appropriate for: active acne (the blade spreads bacteria and causes trauma to inflamed lesions), rosacea (the physical trauma can trigger flares), very sensitive or reactive skin, post-procedure skin that has not fully healed, or patients on isotretinoin (which thins the skin and increases sensitivity to physical trauma). For appropriate candidates — patients with dull, dry, or textured skin who want a preparatory treatment before makeup or an event — it is a safe and effective option in experienced clinical hands.
