Dark Circles
Dark circles are darkening or discolouration of the skin around or under the eyes, giving it an appearance of a black, blue, or dark brown colour. Many people suffer from tired eyes and prominent dark circles underneath the eyes.
Dark circles can be caused due to the natural ageing process, but there are various other causes, including the following:
- Nutritional deficiencies: Anemia, iron deficiency or thyroid dysfunction
- Periorbital Edema: when fluid is collected under the eye
- Prominent vasculature: when the thickness of the overlying skin is reduced
- Acanthosis Nigricans: relating to insulin hormone imbalance or other metabolic disorders
- Tear trough depression: occurs due to the loss of fat content and a sunken appearance of the eyes
- Allergic: constant rubbing of eyes leading to thickening of under-eye skin and hyperpigmentation
- Hereditary: family history of under-eye pigmentation
Before & After
A detailed history and examination help in assessing the cause for the dark circles, and a treatment plan is devised accordingly.
Chemical peels can lighten dark circles or even laser therapy which uses heat energy to vaporize damaged cells.
Fillers can also be given, such as Restylane or Juvederm. This can be injected into the tissue under the eye and helps with volume loss which is the root cause of dark circles.
